Ritual Spoon Pendant, Jadeite
Date: 10th–4th century B.C.
Geography: Mexico, Mesoamerica
Culture: Olmec
Jade t-shaped pendants such as this blue-green example are known as ritual “spoons,” thought to have been used for ceremonial consumption of hallucinogenic substances. Olmec sculptures depicted individuals wearing such pendants over the chest. A similar t-shaped motive on pendants in the later Maya culture signified sacred breath.
