German enthusiast Roman “Der8auer” Hartung undertook to find out the degree of truthfulness of a statement from AMD regarding the fact that two of the four crystal processors Ryzen Threadripper are simply silicon blanks and do not contain CPU cores, cache, and other items. For this Der8auer opened the cover of another processor Threadripper, separated the crystals from the substrate and examined their structure.
The experiment appears expensive: CPU model 1950X Novel cost nearly €1000, not to mention the many hours of free time. The enthusiast decided not to open more than cheap or even free pre-production sample Ryzen Threadripper because AMD could refer to “dampness” of the latter.
The experience consisted of several stages. On the first Der8auer produced metal device for “scalping” Threadripper — prototype of a new version Delid Die Mate. Next, the processor was successfully removed cap under which, as expected, were four of the same kind of crystal Zeppelin. They needed to separate from the substrate without damaging the bottom (contact) surface with a “pattern”. This novel has achieved by lowering the CPU crystal down on a heated to several hundred degrees copper bar.
The substrate went bubbles and thoroughly darkened, but the chips Zeppelin separated from the PCB remained intact. Then with a few 3M sanding films with grains from 40 µm to 3 µm Roman removed the surface layer of the silicon crystals, and as it turned out, they all included the following structural units of hundreds of millions of 14-nm transistors. These blocks visible to the naked eye.
What follows from this? First, note the insincerity of AMD in respect of “stuffing” Ryzen Threadripper. These processors are largely (minus Infinity Fabric, additional lines PCI Express 3.0 memory channels) EPYC server copy, and no disc is disconnected crystals. Second, it is possible that suitable chips Zeppelin not so muchas they show marketers AMD. The company had previously “counted” the number of transistors in Llano APU FM1 platform, but also deceived investors in the prospects of their first hybrid processors. Finally, the third conclusion that can be drawn on the results of the experiment, Roman “Der8auer” Hartung is the prospect of a future 24 – and 32-core processors Ryzen Threadripper. It is not excluded that under favorable conditions, AMD decided to release them last summer, but in this case, it would hurt sales EPYC, and to resort to “heavy artillery” in the fight for a small share of the market (each sold HEDT processor usually have dozens of normal), it went too far.
