Occasionally used in fireworks to produce a purple color, rubidium also has a variety of highly specified uses. It is one of the most common atomic species employed for laser cooling and Bose–Einstein condensation and its energy levels make it useful in atomic clocks. The element is also used in locating and imaging brain tumors, in certain types of glass, and has even been tested for its influence on manic depression and depression.
