Pumice Desert, Crater Lake National Park, Klamath County, Oregon, 2014.
The eruption of Mazama which led to creation of Crater Lake also led to the deposit of millions of cubic meters of ash and pumice, especially on the northwest slope. Porous and deep, the volcanic material drains quickly after precipitation, and thus vegetation is hard pressed to invade. I like to enter the park by the North entrance to see this desert area before witnessing the lake itself.
