Sherds from storage vessels with maritime scenes, depicting a man standing on a fish-shaped prow, and men aboard a ship holding spears, from town VIII. Below, detail from a restored storage vessel depicting four manned ships.

(Middle Bronze Age)

Really interesting pieces of pottery regarding marine scenes are also these sherds from Atalanti. Piracy was one of the most longlasting realities of the Mediterranean. In most greek islands, the main settlements would be built in the mainland, at the top of a high hill, or a mountain. The houses would be built really close to each other, leaving a very narrow walking space, something that would make invasion really difficult and more manageable. As these scale models of the early fortifications of prehistoric communities in Aigina betray, the inhabitants were prepared to defend both their property and livelihood.
