Mount Taranaki An astronaut on the International Space Station…

Mount Taranaki

An astronaut on the International Space Station took this magnificent photo of Mount Taranaki on the North Island of New Zealand. The dormant stratovolcano is considered to be among the most symmetrical in the world, with the exception of a vent called Fantham’s Peak that protrudes from the south flank.

Evident in this photo is the ring of debris surrounding the mountain. It’s made of up lava, debris, and lahar (mudflow) deposits. The last eruption was in 1854.

The volcano resides in Egmont National Park and is popular with climbers. The boudcary of the national park stands out readily even in shots from space.
