Prehistoric Iron Bar Hoard, Royal Albert Museum and Gallery, Exeter, 29.12.17.
This lovely pile of 80 corroded iron bars (dated to approximately 2200 to 2000 years old) were found by a farmer and metal detectorists in Coffinswell. The bundle was tied together placed in a bracken lined pit. Julius Caesar mentioned that British tribes used iron bars as a form of currency. Whilst they cannot be defined as currency as we know it today, they are a way of demonstrating iron quality and a unit of ritual exchange.
