Soviet and Chinese soldiers engage in a shoving match near the border between the two nations along the Ussuri River. The USSR and China came close to war several times in the late 1960s, largely as a result of the Chinese Cultural Revolution’s anti-Soviet turn. It was not uncommon for people out of favor with the Chinese government to be labeled a “Khrushchev” or “Brezhnev” as an insult. Tensions reduced as the Cultural Revolution became less intense in the early 1970s.
