L’Anse aux Meadows The landing of the Vikings in North America

L’Anse aux Meadows is (so far) the only known Viking site in North America and the earliest evidence of Europeans in the western hemisphere. It is recognized as both a National Historic site and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

It is operated by Parks Canada in partnership with the Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador. The site was in use by the Vikings about 1000 years ago.

The site has an informative interpretation centre through which you access the site, with the ruins and reconstruction being a few minutes walk from the centre. It is worth noting that this site is on the northern limit of the western peninsular of Newfoundland, several hours driving from the closest major towns.
