Cairnpapple Hill Tombs Interiors, West Lothian, Scotland,…

Cairnpapple Hill Tombs Interiors, West Lothian, Scotland, 6.4.18.

This is my first visit to see the tomb interiors. What you can see here is the first cairn burial centre or North Grave (Image 2) and then the second cairn burial centre or Cist Cairn (Image 3). After the Second World War, a concrete dome was erected over the sites and they were preserved for public view. The North Grave was constructed around 4000 years ago whilst the second cairn was built at a later date during the Bronze Age. The last image is of potential ring rock art on the basalt edge of the North Grave.

Whilst the preservation method of the two tombs may seem severe, the exposed location would see the basalt stones crumble without some protection. As you can see, however, damp is a problem nonetheless.
