Saturday 4th June 2016 was the premiere of the NAS PADI Wreck Detective distinctive specialty in the Netherlands. This specialty course is developed by the Nautical Archaeological Society (NAS) and is recognised by PADI as a distinctive specialty.
The Wreck Detective specialty was developed by the NAS to introduce divers to maritime archaeology in a responsible way. The specialty addresses the opportunities and issues of wreck research and discusses amongst others: underwater archaeology, construction types and key features of ships, methods and techniques of wreck investigation and mapping, the legal framework and a case study. The course took one day in which two open water dives took place.
The case study in the first course was the wreck of the “Archimedes” in the Oostvoornse Meer. In two open water dives the theory was put into practice. The “Archimedes” – which in fact turns out not to be the Archimedes – was sketched, measured, recorded with the computer programme Site Recorder and captured in mosaic photos.
The feedback of the course participants was extremely positive: “it’s very good that so many aspects were discussed”, “the exercises underwater were fun and instructive. All in all an excellent day”, “the site is nice because it is “real” and one got the idea of really contributing” and finally “the explanation and guidance was excellent: calm, structured and stimulating”.
Because of the great interest a second PADI Wreck Detective specialty will be planned in September 2016 by the same instructor.
