Elemental Applications: Gadolinium

Like many of the other rare earth elements, gadolinium is not widely used but instead has a variety of specialized applications. With unusual metallurgic properties, even as little as 1% gadolinium can improve the workability and resistance of iron, chromium, and related alloys to high temperatures and oxidation. The fact that gadolinium is paramagnetic makes it useful in MRI machines and the element is also used in other imaging systems thanks to its properties as a phosphor.
