Like most of the other rare earth elements, terbium is really only used in specialized applications, due to its rarity. The element is often added as a dopant in materials used in solid-state devices, such as calcium fluoride, calcium tungstate, and strontium molybdate and in alloys for the production of electronic devices. One such alloy, Terfenol-D, is used in magnetomechanical devices such as actuators and sensors.
Commonly used compounds of terbium include terbium oxide, which is used as green phosphors in fluorescent lamps and TVs, and sodium terbium borate, which is also used in solid-state devices.
