Rock Art at Hadrian’s Wall, Northumbria, 14.4.18.
Northumbria is one of the richest counties for prehistoric rock art and the stretch of Roman wall at Steel Rigg seems to provide a dramatic backdrop for several examples of cup marks and grooves. Whether these existed pre-wall is of debate. Were they created by Romans idling away a moment or was this an occupational statement in regards to the construction of a Roman wall upon a native British sacred site? Are they more modern?
