Dolichenum or Temple to Jupiter Dolichenus at Vindolanda Roman…

Dolichenum or Temple to Jupiter Dolichenus at Vindolanda Roman Fort, Northumberland, 29.4.18.

This temple is one of my favourite parts of the Vindolanda Fort. Jupiter Dolichenus was an unusual and distinctive god originally from the south-eastern region of what is now modern Turkey who represented the weather. The temple was built around 220CE by the commanding officer of the fourth cohort of the Gauls. The worship of this god became widespread by the Roman Army through the second century although this was disbanded as Christianity became more prevalent. This building was destroyed and set on fire around 370CE. The worship of this god is associated with feasting and it is likely that the central chamber was heated for this purpose and there is evidence of an Aedicula or shrine to the God at one end.
