Shops, Workshops and a Tavern, Vindolanda Roman Fort, Northumberland, 29.4.18.
The vitality and civic heart of the Vindolanda Roman Fort is not captured in its officious military buildings but the small shops, workshops and taverns that existed around its periphery. Pictured here is the main road running through and from the fort, a butcher’s shop (with counter) found with cattle bone remains (Images 2 and 5), other small shops and workshops with open facades to allow for the intense heat from metalworking (Images 6 and 7). The penultimate image is of a large tavern, a likely hub of the fort and a substantial building and open space.
