The Courtyard House, Caerwent Roman City, Monmouthshire,…

The Courtyard House, Caerwent Roman City, Monmouthshire, 6.5.18.

This is my first ever visit to Caerwent and I was really stunned by the frequency and quality of Roman sites within the walled settlement. Pictured here are the foundations and remains of the large courtyard house that was built in the 1st or 2nd century CE and then subsequently rebuilt a century or slightly later to form a much larger villa with courtyards. Part of the house is obscured under modern housing and it is thought that such rooms contained mosaics. Still visible are the remains of a hypocaust whose supporting columns or pilae are still visible. (Images 1, 3 and 4). This was a luxury residence for an official of status.
