Epiacum Roman Fort, Cumbria, 11.8.18.

This is another first visit for me; what an amazing place! Described by Prof. Stewart Ainsworth of ‘The Time Team’ as “arguably the best preserved Roman fort in England”, the site remains unexplored and unearthed. A clearly defined fort with angle towers and four gates, the perimeters are further fortified by layered ramparts that have sunk to become deep furrows in the landscape. Nearby can be found a buried Roman bath house, a parade ground and a roundhouse enclosure on a neighbouring hill. There is a real sense of buried history under your feet as you stand in the space. Apparently moles are unearthing spectacular finds on occasion. Please note that the property is in the care of a trust and is not open to casual ‘detectorists’!
