Sicily establishes Archaeological Park of Segesta

The archaeological park of Segesta is seeing the light in Sicily. It will have autonomy in terms of scientific research, management, administration and finances. Its creation was promoted by the regional government headed by Nello Musumeci, who has planned an additional 17. The next one should reportedly be Pantelleria.

Ever since the approval of regional law 20 in 2000 on archaeological parks, three have been created on the island: Agrigento, Naxos-Taormina and Selinunte-Cave di Cusa.

“The new management of local cultural heritage – said Musumeci – starts here. Only three parks in 18 years represent one of the region’s paradoxes as it did not implement a good law that many envy us. Segesta, with its theater and temple, is one of Sicily’s symbols in the world. The heritage of our island deserves to be enhanced and given back to Sicilians. The full implementation of the law will enable us to embrace the most modern forms of valorization and management of the cultural heritage”.

“So far only the park of the Valley of the Temples has been managed with criteria that truly make it independent from a financial, scientific and managerial standpoint. This has enabled an extraordinary development compared to other structures. In fact, the number of visitors in Agrigento has increased by about 30% each year, reaching one million visitors and receiving this year the landscape prize of the Council of Europe. In 2007 and in 2013, the Parks of Naxos and Selinunte were formally instituted but they don’t have full autonomy. They will soon have same dignity together with others”.

Segesta (Greek: Egesta; Sicilian: Siggésta) was one of the major cities of the Elymian people, one of the three indigenous peoples of Sicily. The other major cities of the Elymians were Eryx and Entella. It is located in the northwestern part of Sicily in Italy, near the modern comune of Calatafimi-Segesta in the province of Trapani. The Hellenization of Segesta happened very early and had a profound effect on its people.
