Benwell Roman Temple, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northern England,…

Benwell Roman Temple, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northern England, 24.3.18.

Tucked away in the centre of a housing estate in Newcastle, this Roman Temple served those Romans working on Hadrian’s Wall and the nearby Benwell fort and vallum crossing. This temple served the god, Antenociticus, who could have been a local god or one worshipped by the Vangiones, troops from the Upper Rhineland, Germany, who were stationed here. At one end of the temple was a large statue dedicated to the god. A statue head was recovered and is now on display in the Great North Museum. I’ll post this later in the week.
