Branched polymers occur when a substituent (such as hydrogen) on a monomer is replaced with another chain of the polymer. (If the replacement is of a different polymer, that is called a graft copolymer). Polymers which are branched but not crosslinked are generally thermoplastic.
Different types of branching include star-shaped polymers (bottom right image), comb polymers, brush polymers, and dendrimers (upper right image) – which are repetitively branched.
