In northwestern Turkey, a rare find has turned up special bronze athletes’ tools that date back some 2,000 years. The curve-shaped tools, called strigils, were found in burials at the ancient city Greek of Assos.

Strigils were used by athletes to clean themselves after a contest by scraping off dirt, perspiration, and oil that was applied before bathing.

Some of the strigils found were iron, but most were made of bronze. Their presence in a grave suggests that the person was probably an athlete or soldier.
