St Mark’s Basilica damaged by acqua alta

St Mark’s Basilica in Venice was damaged by Monday’s exceptionally high acqua alta in the lagoon city, the First Procurator of St Mark’s, Carlo Alberto Tesserin, said Tuesday.

The water, which reached 156 centimetres in the lagoon, reached 90 centimetres above the mosaic floor
of the Narthex, bathing the monumental Byzantine bronze doors, the columns, the marbles

The high water submerged some tens of square metres of the thousand-year-old marble mosaic floor opposite the altar of the Madonna Nicopeia and completely inundated the Baptistery and the Zen Chapel, he said.

The high water of the lagoon also flooded the main body of the Basilica of San Marco in Venice, bathing a few dozen
square metres of the millennial marble mosaic floor in front of the altar of the Madonna Nicopeia and completely

The water reached a depth of 90 centimetres above the mosaic flooring of the Narthex, washing up against the monumental Byzantine doors, the columns and the marbles, he said.
