Small loaves of bread left in an Egyptian tomb, ca. 2400 BCE. The offering of grave goods was a key part of ancient Egyptian funerary practices, and food like this was intended to give the deceased person some sustenance in their passage to the afterlife. The leaving of grave goods faded out in the Mediterranean region during the Roman period.
