Hardknott Roman Fort (Outer Wall and Towers), Cumbria, 31.7.18.
This is the first time I have photographed this site although I have visited it before and I cannot think of a Roman site more dramatically located. Close to the Neolithic and Bronze Age sites of Burn Moor, this fort sits in the narrow rocky pass across the harsh mountains and peaks of the Lake District. Due to its remote location, it is surprisingly intact and the original walls are clearly visible (reconstruction only takes place above the slate markers on the outer wall) (Images 5 and 6). Also pictured here are the angle towers that were constructed to give soldiers a better commanding view of any threat or danger.
Built in the reign of Hadrian (117 to 138 CE) by troops from present day Croatia, it can only be imagined how hard life must have been in this rocky landscape through the winter months. The remains of the Roman road to the site can be seen as an earthwork today.
